Storm Falls in Close Battle to Hillsdale

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Hillsdale, 61-60. 

Lake Erie rolled out of the gate with an 11-0 run leading to a Hillsdale timeout. Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) scored the final five points of the run as he made a three and a layup. Hillsdale made a three and the Storm answered with another 6-0 run. Lake Erie led 17-3 at the under 15 media timeout. Following the timeout, Hillsdale scored four straight points and 11 of the next 14 points as they cut the lead to six with 9:50 to go in the first half. Ennis Thomas (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) ended the run with a dunk off of a steal. The Storm pushed the lead to 11 twice with three pointers from Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North). Hillsdale closed the lead to three in the final minute but Howard ended the half with a jumper. Lake Erie led 36-31 at the half.

Howard led the Storm with nine points as the Storm shot 57% from the floor.

Wells opened the second half with six straight points for the Storm. Lake Erie pushed the lead to nine three minutes into the half. Hillsdale pulled within six before Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) made a layup with 14:20 left. Lake Erie led 44-36 at the under 15 media timeout. Lake Erie came out of the timeout with a 10-4 run that included four free throws and back-to-back threes from Howard. Howard's second three opened a 54-40 lead for the Storm. A layup by Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) broke up a Hillsdale 9-2 run with 6:03 left in the game. At the under-five media timeout, Lake Erie led by seven, 58-51. Hillsdale answered with a 6-0 run in the next four minutes, pulling within one at 60-59. The Chargers made two free throws with 17 seconds left, taking a 61-60 lead. That was the final score as the Chargers won 61-60.

The Storm was led by Howard as he had 17 points and five assists.  Wells pitched in with 11 points and a team high eight rebounds.  Kynard added seven points and five rebounds for the Storm.

Head Coach Kyle Conley said "Howard and Wells played tremendous and overall our best defensive effort of the year. The game was won on the offensive boards as we were out rebounded 15-5." 

Lake Erie will be back in action Monday (Jan. 30) when they travel to take on Ohio Dominican with the game set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
