Storm Football Season Officially Underway

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie College Storm football team opened up the 2018 season today with a 0-69 loss to Edinboro University at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.

The Storm started off on a high note with the disruption of the first drive of the game for the Fighting Scots. The Scots ran 11 plays for 40 yards, but ended it with an interception by Thomas Covington at the third yard line in Lake Erie territory.

The Storm battled the Fighting Scots hard in the first quarter, only trailing by 14 at the end of the first. But by the end of the first half Edinboro had a commanding lead over the Storm, 35-0.

In the third quarter, the Storm gave up 21 more points on defense.

The Storm defense improved in the fourth quarter and only gave up 13 points to finish the game.

On offense, Storm senior Javarian Smith threw for 93 yards. His longest gain was a connection with Nate Dantley for 18 yards. Dantley was targeted four times for 53 yards in the contest.

On defense, Elems Ulkwu led the effort with ten total tackles, eight of which were solo. Storm defense ended up with 71 total tackles, and two interceptions by Thomas Covington.

Special teams were a highlight for the Storm today, with Desmond Turner leading the team in kickoff receptions with 140 yards on six attempts, including a gain of 42 yards. Cameron Cobb was not far behind him, finishing his day 82 yards on four attempts.

Punter Hamandy Diallo totaled 309 yards on nine attempts, including a 56 yard punt from the Storm 37 yard line that was downed at Edinboro's seven-yard line.

Head Coach Gerald Hazzard says, "It's all about the little things; that's what I stressed when I talked to our Student-Athletes in the locker room at halftime. The little things are so important when it comes to playing as a team. We had a lot of turnovers, and didn't execute when we needed to because we lost track of the little things that need to be done in a football game. We'll work hard this week, and be very aware in practice of those little things that add up at the end of the day to be successful in conference play next week".

The Storm travels to Malone next week for their first conference and road game of the 2018 season. Their next home game is on Saturday, 29 September at 12pm against Findlay.
