Storm Prevails in Overtime Against Walsh, 34-33

CANTON, Ohio—The Lake Erie College football team picked up their first win of the season Saturday (Sept. 19), 34-33, in overtime against Walsh University in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.

Mitchel Tilley (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) scored the eventual game-winning touchdown in overtime on a 22-yard run.

The Storm struck first early in the first quarter when Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) found the end zone from eight yards out.  They elected to go for two but were unable to convert.

Walsh took the lead, 10-6, following a field goal and touchdown.  

In the opening minute of the second quarter,  Michel Hokavar (Perry, Ohio/Perry) found tight end Anthony Kukwa (Perry, Ohio/Perry/Ball State) for a 24-yard score.  Following the extra point by Michael Muzic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), the Storm led 13-10. 

In the final minute of the opening half, the Cavaliers capped off a 96-yard drive with a three-yard passing touchdown to take a 17-13 lead into the half.  The Cavaliers upped their lead to 11 following a long passing play late in the third quarter.

Trailing by 11, Tyler Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) scored from three yards out to cut the lead to five.  Once again, the Storm elected to go for two, but this time around, Ryan Bitzer (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Orange) found Kukwa for the conversion. 

The Cavaliers answered with a 45-yard field goal to extend their lead to 27-21 with under five minutes to play.

In the final minute of the fourth, Brandon Phenix (Toledo, Ohio/Maumee) scored on a 2-and-10 from 16-yards out to tie the game.  However, the Storm failed the point after, sending the game into overtime.

The Storm got the ball first in the extra session.  On their second play, Tilley scored from 22 yards out.  Muzic converted the extra point, giving the Storm a seven point lead.

Similar to the Storm, Walsh scored on their second play, a 24-yard pass.  The Cavaliers opted to go for the two point conversion and the win.  However, their pass attempt fell short as the Storm hung on for the 34-33 overtime win.

Phenix led the Storm offense with 136 rushing yards and one touchdown on 32 attempts.   Aaron Lindgren added 39 yards and a touchdown on the ground. 

Hokavar completed 16-of-32 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown.  Shane Van Fleteren (Shelby, Mich./Utica) was his top target, hauling in seven passes for 91 yards.  Tilley caught two passes for 65 yards.

The Storm offense totaled 463 yards and 24 first downs. 

Nick Szabados (Middletown, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller) and Davon Daniels (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) led the Storm defense with nine tackles apiece.  Dylan Starks (Freemont, Ohio/Freemont Ross) had seven tackles while Christian Cole (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) had six.  Alec Heldreth (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) had 1.5 sacks.  The Storm totaled six sacks and 10 tackles for loss.  Cole, Adam Mial (Beverly Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio/Copley/Stark State) had an interception apiece for the Storm.

The Storm is back in action next Saturday (Sept. 26) against Grand Valley State University.
