Birchmeier Plays All Nine Positions vs Gannon

EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team concluded the non-conference schedule with a matchup with the Gannon University Golden Knights on Wednesday (May 2) at Classic Park.

Lake Erie fell 14-1 in seven innings to Gannon. Senior Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) played all nine positions on the diamond during the game.

Gannon jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a single run in the third and fourth innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Birchmeier lined a one-out solo homerun to the grass in left center field. The Storm trimmed the lead to 2-1 after four innings.

The Golden Knights added eight runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, completing the scoring at 14-1.

Birchmeier started the game at second base before moving to catcher in the second inning. He threw out a runner trying to steal second base. He played shortstop, third base and first base in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively. He began the sixth inning in left field before beginning the seventh in center field. During the seventh inning, he moved to right field for a batter before entering to pitch. He faced five batters with one run allowed on one hit and three walks.

The Storm will begin the final series of the regular season on Saturday (May 5) with a doubleheader at Malone, starting at 1:00 PM.
