Storm Falls at Concord in Doubleheader

ATHENS, W. Va. – The Lake Erie College baseball team concluded the final series before conference play with a doubleheader against the Concord University Mountain Lions on Saturday (March 10) afternoon.

The Storm fell in game one by a final score of 11-6 and 8-2 in the nightcap.


Lake Erie scored two runs in the top of the first inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. The Storm got three straight singles from Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina), Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg), and Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) as they loaded the bases with one out. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) followed with a two-run single to left field.

In the second inning, the Storm loaded the bases again with two walks and a bunt single. Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) opened the inning with a walk and scored on a fielder's choice by Forrest Longeway (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills). Lake Erie led 3-0 heading to the bottom of the second.

Concord cut the lead to two in the bottom half of the second inning with a single run.

The Storm gained the run right back in the top of the third inning. Williams reached on a fielder's choice following a leadoff error. He advanced from first to third on a throwing error by the Concord pitcher. Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) singled home Williams as Lake Erie made it 4-1.

The Mountain Lions scored two runs in the third before Lake Erie responded with a pair of response runs in the fourth. Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) opened the inning with a leadoff double, then Brady Minetti (Mckees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) walked. Both runners moved into scoring position with a balk by the Concord pitcher. Birchmeier plated both runners with a two-run double a batter later. The Storm led 6-3 after four innings.

Concord added five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth, taking the first game 11-6 in seven innings.

Birchmeier had three hits, including a double and two RBI. Six other players had a hit as Lake Erie had nine hits in the opener.

Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) pitched four innings as the starter. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.


Concord struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a run.

The Storm tied the game at one with a run in the top of the second inning. Waller led off with the inning with a walk before Carver doubled him over to third base. Erzen plated Waller with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Mountain Lions used two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead over the Storm.

Lake Erie cut the deficit to one with a run in the top of the fourth. Waller lined a one-out double to left field, then Carver was hit by a pitch. Erzen found a hole in the left side and poked a RBI single through, scoring Waller from second base. The Storm could not tie the game in the frame as they loaded the bases with one out.

Concord sealed the game with a pair of runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Concord won the nightcap 8-2.

Six different players accounted for the Storm hits with Erzen driving in both runs and Waller scoring both of the Storm's runs.

Peter Theodos (St. Albans, W. Va. / St. Albans) started the second game and allowed one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

The Storm will open the Great Midwest schedule with a doubleheader at Ohio Valley on Tuesday (March 13). The games will begin at 12:00 PM.
