Offense Comes Up Big in Storm's Win at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W. Va.- The Lake Erie College baseball team scored four runs in the final two innings as the Storm came back to defeat the University of Charleston (W. Va.) Golden Eagles 13-10 on Wednesday (April 5).

"The score isn't going to reflect this but I really think that that was a good team win," said Storm head coach Cameron Castro. "Without a question, out best offensive performance all year. It's not even close. Some freshmen showed out in a big way. Paxton and Potesta were solid at the bottom of the mineup helping to turn it over. Plus Sam had another great day at the plate. We showed some good plate awareness there in the last inning to extend some at-bats. Specifically Rua."

Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) got the Storm on the board with a one-out solo homerun in the top of the first inning.

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the first before the Storm regained a 2-1 advantage in the top of the second. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) came home on a RBI double by Drew Potesta (Canfield, Ohio / Ursuline).

Charleston pushed four runs across in the second inning to take a 5-2 lead over the Storm.

The Storm continued to chip away at the lead with a run in the third and the fourth innings, respectively. In the third, Browning opened with a double, moved to third on an error and scored on a RBI groundout by Rua. In the fourth, Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) reached on a single and advanced to third on a strikeout and error. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) plated Paxton with a RBI single, cutting the lead to 5-4.

Charleston added three more runs in the fifth inning to push the advantage to 8-4.

Lake Erie took back the lead with a five run sixth inning. The Storm loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. A wild pitch scored one run before Rua singled home the second run. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) walked to load the bases once again with one out. Paxton brought home two more runs with a two-run single to center field. Potesta followed with a RBI single to plate Waller as the Storm took a 9-8 advantage.

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, taking a 10-9 lead.

With the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) tied the game at ten with a RBI single.

The first three batters reached in the ninth inning for the Storm. Rua coaxed a bases loaded walk that scored the leading run. Waller followed with a RBI single of his own. After a hit batter, Brady Minetti (Mckees Rocks, Pa. / Montour)capped the inning with a RBI bunt single. The Storm won the game by a 13-10 final score.

Browning and Paxton each had three hits in the game. Potesta, Waller and Rua totaled two hits per person. Rua and Browning scored four runs each in the game.

Peter Theodos (St. Albans, W. Va. / St. Albans) tossed two scoreless innings in the bullpen with one hit allowed while Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) escaped a bases loaded jam in his inning of work.

"And the last three innings on the mound with Peter and Middendorf, they had to pitch out of some jams but didn't back down."

The Storm will return to the diamond on Saturday (April 8) at Northwood.

"Now, the plan has to be to roll this momentum into this weekend at Northwood."
