Walsh Defeats Storm in GLIAC Doubleheader

MINERVA, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team completed the four game series with the Walsh University Cavaliers on Tuesday (March 21) afternoon at Minerva High School.

The Storm dropped both games by final scores of 11-2 and 17-8.

"We had another good day defensively but we just weren't able to do enough to keep ourselves in it," said Storm head coach Cameron Castro. "I was happy with our effort and concentration. Denied a couple shutdown innings of theirs which is something we've been talking about offensively."

GAME ONE

The Cavaliers scored four runs in the first inning and added six runs in the fifth inning.

Lake Erie got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) opened the inning with a double. After a groundout, Drew Potesta (Canfield, Ohio / Ursuline) plated Waller with a RBI groundout.

Walsh responded with a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) led off with a double. Erzen moved to third on a groundout, and came home by a RBI groundout by Jacob Armstrong (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark). Walsh took game one 11-2.

Waller and Erzen each had two hits in the game.

Peter Theodos (St. Albans, W. Va. / St. Albans) threw two innings of one run ball (unearned) in a relief role.

GAME TWO

Walsh jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Lake Erie responded with three runs in the second inning, tying the game at three.

Lake Erie loaded the bases with one out in the second. Erzen reached on an error, Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) walked, and Armstrong singled. Austin Bovenzi (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) singled home Paxton and Erzen with a two-run single. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) followed with a fielder's choice that scored Armstrong.

The Cavaliers regained a 7-3 lead with four runs in the second.

Rua plated a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and Erzen drove in a run with a RBI single in the fifth inning. The Storm trailed 7-5 at the halfway point.

Walsh added two runs in the fifth and six in the sixth inning.

Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) opened the seventh inning with a double for Lake Erie. Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) singled home Birchmeier for the Storm's sixth run of the nightcap.

Walsh scored two runs in the seventh.

Three straight singles by the Storm loaded the bases in the eighth. Browning plated the first run with a RBI groundout. The second run scored on a passed ball. The Storm fell 17-8 in the nightcap.

Waller and Bovenzi each had two hits in the second game. Waller finished the day with four hits in two games.

"It was good to see Waller come alive a bit today especially since we bumped him up to the two hole and he really responded."

Nick DeJesus (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) pitched three innings of relief work with two runs allowed and five strikeouts. Jeremy Wei (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) threw one scoreless inning in relief. "DeJesus showed us a little something out of the pen too and we got a good outing from Wei too. Both are big positives for us going forward."

"We even got a couple young guys [Paxton and Minetti] in there that swung it pretty well and put some balls in play."

The Storm will return to the diamond on Thursday (March 23) as they travel to Gannon for a nine inning game.

"Overall just have to put this one behind us and prep for Findlay. But will have a good test against Gannon in the meantime."
