Leeworthy's Five-RBI Help Storm Wrap Up Spring Trip With 11-2 Win at Saint Augustine's

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Behind a big game from sophomore Jae Leeworthy (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) and three home runs, the Lake Erie College baseball team bounced back from its worst loss of the season with an 11-2 victory at Saint Augstine’s College Saturday (March 6) to wrap up its spring break trip.
Leeowrthy drove in a career-high five runs in the game. He, junior Nick Lovick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and sophomore Ryan Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst) all left the yard as the Storm (3-3) matched its season high with 15 hits.
After a scoreless first, sophomore Matt Lott (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic) singled in Lovick in the second for the game’s first run. Leeworthy followed with a three-run homer to left center for a 4-0 lead.
The score remained that way until Lovick hit a two-run shot, his second of the year, in the fifth to put the Storm up 6-0. Saint Augustine’s (9-3) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Lake Erie put the game away with a four-run seventh highlighted by a two-run shot by Rua. Leeworthy added a sacrifice fly later in the inning and singled in another in the eighth.
The offensive support was more than enough for the Storm staff headed by sophomore Pat Mulligan (Brookfield, Ohio/Brookfield). Mulligan (1-1) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out three. Freshman Adam Beach (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Rua combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to close it out.
Lovick finished three-for-four at the plate and scored three times. Classmate Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) also went three-for-four and scored twice. Leeworthy and freshman Cody Blood (Conneaut, Ohio/Coneaut) each had two hits.
The Storm returns north and will play a four-game series next weekend, March 13-14, at Salem International University.
